The Sakha Cultural Society, established in 1987 by the late Shri Amarjit Singh Kohli, has played a significant role in India's cultural sphere for over 58 years. Since 1966, he has dedicated his life to organising over 500 large-scale stage events, including theatre, opera, musical programs, ghazals, and star-studded film shows. He played a crucial role in promoting art and culture in the national capital by founding and nurturing numerous cultural organisations. Mr Kohli profoundly impacted Delhi's cultural heritage, and his significant contributions to promoting art, honouring artists, and nurturing talent across generations have been exceptional.
These esteemed annual award ceremonies in Delhi recognised approximately 1000 film artists across various categories, including heroes, heroines, producers, directors, music directors, lyricists, cinematographers, villains, vamps, dancers, story writers, screenplay writers, choreographers, film editors, film journalists, music companies (such as T-Series, HMV), stunt directors, TV serial producers, actors, and actresses. These grand events, graced by the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, were the most significant and extensive in Delhi then. The awards were televised on Doordarshan, which monopolised broadcasting during that period.
SAKHA, a leading cultural society of Delhi founded by Amarjit Singh Kohli in 1987, has a 58-year rich and glorious history. It is renowned for its pioneering efforts in reviving and popularising the golden era of Indian Film Music. It organises Annual Functions in honour of legendary singers and music directors, a platform that has significantly contributed to the revival and popularisation of Indian Film Music.

Furthermore, Mr. Amarjit Singh Kohli has made valuable contributions to promoting and developing young talent. Many individuals he supported have grown into renowned Ustads, such as the esteemed Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan, who now leads the Delhi Gharana. These individuals have made a lasting impression on the cultural landscape of Delhi. SAKHA has also played a pivotal role in discovering and nurturing singers through music competitions, with some rising to become well-known playback singers, including Sonu Nigam.
The organisation has also organised notable events, such as the Mahabharata Nite and Kumar Sanu – Sapna Mukerji Nite, drawing thousands of attendees. Since 1988, SAKHA has organised over 40 programs at Sirifort Auditorium, each attracting more than 2500 spectators. Furthermore, the organisation has established the SAKHA AWARDS to honour prominent figures in the arts, performing arts, theatre, television, and films, with over 1000 awards presented to date, including many distinguished film personalities.
In 2003, Mr Amarjit Singh Kohli established the Kalpana Chawla Excellence Awards, a joint initiative by SAKHA & PECOBA, to honour the memory of the late astronaut Kalpana Chawla. She tragically perished in the Space Shuttle Columbia crash on February 1, 2003. These prestigious awards celebrated women achievers who demonstrated excellence across diverse fields, including art, culture, performing arts, business, industry, sports, and more.
