The Sakha Cultural Society

The Sakha Cultural Society, established in 1987 by the late Shri Amarjit Singh Kohli, has played a significant role in India's cultural sphere for over 58 years. Since 1966, he has dedicated his life to organising over 500 large-scale stage events, including theatre, opera, musical programs, ghazals, and star-studded film shows. He played a crucial role in promoting art and culture in the national capital by founding and nurturing numerous cultural organisations. Mr Kohli profoundly impacted Delhi's cultural heritage, and his significant contributions to promoting art, honouring artists, and nurturing talent across generations have been exceptional.

Late Shri Amarjit Singh Kohli was a former and ex-director at BIS, Govt of India. He was National Technical Secretary for 20 years of the Gas Cylinders, Valves, Pressure Regulators Committee of BIS, which has formulated more than 50 national standards, including IS: 6044. He also served as technical secretary of many other BIS committees, including Boilers, Unfired Pressure Vessels, Chemical Engineering & Automobile Engineering. After retirement, he started manufacturing of LPG/PNG equipment.

Harshdeep Singh Kohli exemplifies exceptional business acumen and exceptional leadership, underpinned by over 25 years of distinguished experience. Known for his results-driven mindset and outstanding relationship management skills, Harshdeep has successfully founded, led, and executed impactful business plans across multiple sectors. His collaborative work with over 200 prominent clients and organizations across India reflects his unwavering dedication to excellence.

He currently leads a high-performing team of over 250 accomplished professionals, including MDs, CEOS, CFOS, COOs, and Senior Directors. This dynamic team brings expertise from diverse industries such as Real Estate, Construction, Advisory Services, Regulatory Approvals, Operations, Hospitality, Healthcare, Oil & Gas, Manufacturing, Retail, Education, Music, Culture, the Arts, and NGOs.

Harshdeep also serves as Chairman of Sakha Cultural Society, Sakha Cultural Association (NGO), and Sakha Event Management Pvt Ltd. The Sakha Cultural Society, founded in 1987 by his father, the late Shri Amarjit Singh Kohli, who has proudly contributed to Delhi's cultural heritage for over five decades by promoting music, fine arts, social causes through films, television, live events, and community initiatives all of which is now under Harshdeep's leadership.

Chairman Message

Harshdeep is deeply involved with numerous NGOs, holding key roles as Founder, Global Ambassador, and Global Advisor. For more than 25 years, he has contributed to various causes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his efforts intensified to address the urgent needs related to child education, elderly care, poverty alleviation, and disability support.

Harshdeep's educational foundation was laid at Modem School, Barakhamba Road, one of India's prestigious institutions. Between the ages of 13 and 17, he was Delhi's top-ranked table tennis player, leading the city in various national tournaments. He later pursued a BBA and MBA, while launching a trading business eary in his career and subsequently expanding into sectors such as gas, HR, operations, advisory services, and real estate.

Harshdeep Singh Kohli's journey is a testament to the power of vision, determination, and a profound commitment to societal progress.

Our Legacy

These esteemed annual award ceremonies in Delhi recognised approximately 1000 film artists across various categories, including heroes, heroines, producers, directors, music directors, lyricists, cinematographers, villains, vamps, dancers, story writers, screenplay writers, choreographers, film editors, film journalists, music companies (such as T-Series, HMV), stunt directors, TV serial producers, actors, and actresses. These grand events, graced by the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, were the most significant and extensive in Delhi then. The awards were televised on Doordarshan, which monopolised broadcasting during that period.

SAKHA, a leading cultural society of Delhi founded by Amarjit Singh Kohli in 1987, has a 58-year rich and glorious history. It is renowned for its pioneering efforts in reviving and popularising the golden era of Indian Film Music. It organises Annual Functions in honour of legendary singers and music directors, a platform that has significantly contributed to the revival and popularisation of Indian Film Music.

Mr. Giani Zail Singh presented these prestigious awards during his presidency in India.

Furthermore, Mr. Amarjit Singh Kohli has made valuable contributions to promoting and developing young talent. Many individuals he supported have grown into renowned Ustads, such as the esteemed Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan, who now leads the Delhi Gharana. These individuals have made a lasting impression on the cultural landscape of Delhi. SAKHA has also played a pivotal role in discovering and nurturing singers through music competitions, with some rising to become well-known playback singers, including Sonu Nigam.

The organisation has also organised notable events, such as the Mahabharata Nite and Kumar Sanu – Sapna Mukerji Nite, drawing thousands of attendees. Since 1988, SAKHA has organised over 40 programs at Sirifort Auditorium, each attracting more than 2500 spectators. Furthermore, the organisation has established the SAKHA AWARDS to honour prominent figures in the arts, performing arts, theatre, television, and films, with over 1000 awards presented to date, including many distinguished film personalities.

In 2003, Mr Amarjit Singh Kohli established the Kalpana Chawla Excellence Awards, a joint initiative by SAKHA & PECOBA, to honour the memory of the late astronaut Kalpana Chawla. She tragically perished in the Space Shuttle Columbia crash on February 1, 2003. These prestigious awards celebrated women achievers who demonstrated excellence across diverse fields, including art, culture, performing arts, business, industry, sports, and more.

So far, nine annual award ceremonies have been organised, highlighting the achievements and contributions of outstanding individuals. Notable past awardees include:

  • Padma Vibhushan Zohra Sehgal, renowned for her legendary acting career spanning over a century, lived to the age of 102
  • Padma Vibhushan Capt Lakshmi Sahgal, a distinguished doctor and minister in Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's government in exile who lived to the age of 98,
  • Padma Vibhushan Dr Kapila Vatsyayan is an internationally acclaimed scholar of Indian classical dances, arts, architecture, and more.
  • Padmashree Vidya Ben Shah, who initiated the Bal Bhawan Movement in India at age 90,

In 2007, Mr Amarjit Singh Kohli, serving as the President of Punjabi Kala Sangam, had the honour of introducing the prestigious Punjabi Bhushan Awards (PBA), which aim to recognise and celebrate distinguished individuals from Punjab across various fields.
